By Andrew Herscher
Whereas the development of structure has a spot in architectural discourse, its destruction, normally visible as incompatible with the very suggestion of "culture," has been overlooked in theoretical and historic dialogue. Responding to this forget, Herscher examines the case of the previous Yugoslavia and particularly, Kosovo, the place focusing on structure has been a renowned size of political violence. instead of analyzing violence opposed to structure as an insignificant illustration of "deeper" social, political, or ideological dynamics, Herscher unearths it to be a kind of cultural creation, irreducible to its contexts and formative of the identities and firms that likely endure on it as motives. targeting the actual websites the place violence is inflicted and the place its topics and gadgets are articulated, the publication strains the intersection of violence and structure from socialist modernization, via ethnic and nationalist clash, to postwar reconstruction.

In socialist Yugoslavia, the performance of modernization engaged architecture in two guises. In one guise, architecture was an object of construction, the “modern constructions” that manifested what modernization was; in another guise, architecture was an object of destruction, an abject heritage of premodernity that made manifest what modernization was not. Construction and destruction thereby comprised conjoined architectural supplements of modernization. ”2 This lack was the very incompleteness of modernization as a concept, the incompleteness that required this concept to be supplemented by architecture in the first place.
In 2001, I joined the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, first as a cultural heritage officer and then as the international cohead of the Department of Culture. From 2002 to 2005 I worked on a national inventory of architectural heritage in Kosovo with the Ministry of Culture in Kosovo’s Provisional Institutions of Self-Government. And in 2006 I advised representatives of Kosovo’s provisional government on cultural heritage issues in United Nations–sponsored negotiations with Serbia over Kosovo’s future status.
