We began to get that commitment, that gut commitment—"all right, then, this sacrifice won't be for nothing. " Then we began to build a community, we began to build what would become the Union. Today I don't think our members are going to stop just at building a farm workers' union. In the course of that accomplishment other things are going to be revealed to them, not through me, but through the experience of living. I've heard them say, "We're not going to get paychecks. We're willing to put ourselves with our families on the line!

Many of our chickens drowned. I had a cute hen as a pet that we had found while hunting down some of the many rattlesnakes there were around. Because she had a misshapen wishbone, she left a trail similar to that of a snake. I had became very fond of that cute little hen, and when I found her body, I cried. My dad was hired with his team of horses to help repair the break. I remember sitting there and watching as about eight teams were used in rotation doing what a bulldozer would do nowadays. They had a small scraper and would go in, get the dirt, and come to the bank of the canal.

We began to do away with a lot of little things we thought we just had to have, things we really did not need.
