Imaginemos un sistema formado por una piedra caliente que se sumerge en agua fría. La piedra, al estar más caliente, da lugar a un flujo de calor que va de la piedra al agua (nunca al revés) hasta que las temperaturas de la piedra y el agua se igualan. En este proceso la entropía (el desorden molecular) del agua aumenta mientras que la entropía de la piedra disminuye. Conocidas las temperaturas iniciales de la piedra y del agua y la temperatura final del agua se puede cuantificar el aumento de entropía en el agua calculando la cantidad de calor (en calorías) captado por el agua, que ha hecho aumentar la temperatura del agua en un grado centígrado.
